Training Center
Spanish Class
The training center is located close to the center of town, about a 15-20 minute walk (depending if you are walking up or down the hill) from my house. I wake up at 6 am, take a freezing cold shower and eat the breakfast that Ana prepares for me. Training lasts from 7:30 am-4:30 pm and is comprised of three components: language training, program training and CORE training. Language training last about 4 hours a day and is conducted in small groups, I have five students in my class. I am Intermediate middle right now, which is the level of Spanish that a trainee must have to be sworn in as a volunteer, so at least I have that taken care of. So far I feel comfortable speaking Spanish and am looking forward to continuing to improve.
Our program training is specific to the project we will be working on. This session we have three groups being trained: Health (my project), Water & Sanitation (a bunch of engineers), and Business. So far we have talked about the goals of the Peace Corps Health Project, health issues in Honduras, partner organizations (like USAID) and cross cultural issues.
Goal #1: Community and institutional leaders will provide education to peers in their communities on HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and Reproductive Health Topics. (I will most likely be working on this one, but we don’t get our assignment for two months).
Goal #2: Community and institutional health workers and other leaders will improve community health conditions through better assessment, monitoring, and provision of education to their peers with an emphasis on children less than five years of age and women of reproductive age.
Goal #3: The third goal is new, so I don’t have the wording yet, but Peace Corps will begin to work with people living with HIV/AIDS.
The CORE training includes information about safety and security, health, cultural sensitivity, adult learning, and policies and procedures. So far I have received three shots and still have ten or eleven to go L.
Overall I am very happy to be here and everything is dandy.
